Newsletter 04/15/24 - 04/19/24Leading Off - -A HUGE thanks to everyone who made it to student-led conferences. I hope you were as proud of our students as I was. It is so important for these bright minds to connect with their educational journey. I have seen steady growth in student ownership over the learning process this year and it is so very important and powerful. -This Wednesday the 17th is the 2nd grade showcase. Students will perform at school in the morning for students and after school for families. Students need to be at school at 5:00pm for the after school performance. It will start at 5:15pm. SADLY Mr. Pekarek will be fulfilling his duties as the Ogden East Union Delegate and will not be able to attend the after school performance :-( -We are gearing up to our summative assessment in the communities unit. This week we will plan and next week we will build. Please send in any art materials to help students build - tape, boxes, construction paper and glue are all welcome. Anything that will assist students in building a physical representation of a community is welcome. We will begin building next Monday 4/22. We will host a parent event the morning of 4/26 from 8:00am to 8:30am for all who are able to come and see the amazing job our second graders have done. _______________________________________________ School Wide News: Calendar: April 17th: 2nd Grade Fine Arts Showcase April 25th: Walking Field Trip to the Chicago History Museum April 26th: Community Family Viewing at school - 8:00am-8:30am April 27th: Friends of Ogden Soiree May 9th: International Night May 17th: Round the Owl Art Fair May 22nd: Field Trip to the Garfield Park Conservatory (details and permission slip pending) May 31st: Field Trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo (details and permission slip pending) June 6th: Last Day of School A message from The Friends of Ogden: Please consider attending the Friends of Ogden annual Soiree fundraiser on 4/26..... Thank you, Mrs. Macri ______________________________________________________ Room 214 News: 1. 214 will continue our new IB unit - Services in our Community - This week we will focus on planning for our summative assessment. Students will write about plans for their home and business in our fictional community so they have organized ideas about what exactly we are building. We will add information about goods/services, wants/needs, and suburban/urban/rural areas to our plans. 2. Ms. Devaney has completed her full time teaching and will teach 1/2 time this week. Next week is her last week with the class when she will become a full time observer once again. Ms. Devaney has grown tremendously during her time with us and she has shown she is prepared to lead a classroom of her own next year. Congrats on a job well done and a very bright future Ms. Devaney, you will be missed! 3. Our specials schedule this week looks like this: Monday 04/15 - C Day - Dance Tuesday 04/16 - D Day - Art Wednesday 04/17 - A Day - Physical Education Thursday 04/18 - B Day - Music Friday 04/19 - C Day - Dance 4. Our curriculum this week looks like this: - Reading: This week we will read our story of the week "Robinson and Ricky" in small groups and individually. Students will use this story to strengthen their comprehension, vocabulary, and phonics skills. We will also meet in small groups to read leveled text and explore the value of making predictions when reading. - Phonics: This week in phonics we will complete Unit 13 and start Unit 14 of the Wilson Fundations program. We will take the Unit 13 assessment on Monday. Then we will complete lessons 1-4 of week one of Unit 14 the rest of the week. Topics covered this week will include the vowel teams "ou and "ow", building and tapping words, identifying syllable types, and working with tricky words. - Writing: This week in writing students will either complete their book nominations and/or start working on seeing things with poet's eyes. This will begin our next unit, writing poetry. During this unit students will focus on writing descriptively. If time allows, students will also start to find strong feelings in the concrete details of life (find ideas for poems all around them) and to write descriptively about things that mean a lot to them. - Math: We will continue using the EngageNY math curriculum. This week we will start Module 7:Problem Solving with Length, Money, and Data. This week we will begin Module 7 with lessons 1-4 . Work will focus on counting and categorizing groups of items and organizing the data collected. The math curriculum will continue to be supported by formative loop (a short daily leveled exercise), zearn (an online platform that supports engage NY), and extensions (selections made by teachers to push student learning). - Social Studies - We will continue the 5th IB unit of the year: Services in our Community. The theme of this unit is: "How we organize ourselves." The central idea for this unit is: Communities provide interconnected services and businesses designed to meet people’s needs. The key concepts are causation, change, and responsibility. The lines of inquiry are
Our I.B. units of study should be led by student curiosity and inquiry. This week that will look like students making plans and choices about their homes and jobs in the community we will build next week. -Science - We will continue our unit "Works of Water" by completing the lab: ¨Ẅhat´s strong enough to stop a mudslide?¨ In this lab students will build a mini wall out of toothpicks, dipsticks, cotton balls, and aluminum foil to see if they can stand up to mini ¨floods¨ and keep the soil (cornmenal) from being washed away. This week we will prepare for the lab and next week we will execute it. -SEL (Social Emotional Learning) - This week we will continue to play the games human bar graph, row your boat, follow the leader, going to a party, land and sea, 4 handshakes, and 2 circles. We will also strengthen our SEL vocabulary by reviewing the words/ideas: arrogant, humble, aggressive, passive, and assertive. We will add in the words/ideas gullible and gloating. 5. In closing: I believe that communication is vital to our success this school year, that is why this Newsletter tends to be on the longer side. Please come to me with any issue big or small and I will do my best to find a solution that keeps everyone happy, comfortable, and learning in room 214. Thank you for your partnership, it makes my job so much easier and helps our students reach their potential on a daily basis. I am thankful for you! -Mr. Pekarek (Please feel free to call me Joe) Mr. Joseph Pekarek Ogden International - East Campus 2nd grade / room 214 24 W. Walton St. Chicago Il. 60610 773-534-8110 |
